Classical Guitarist to Teach Master Class at CSUN

Classical guitarist Christopher Parkening will teach a master class at Cal State Northridge this month to benefit the International Guitar Research Archive, which is housed in the CSUN Music Department.

The program will feature several solo performances by musicians who will be critiqued by Parkening.

Not only is it an opportunity for musicians to learn from their mistakes, but also for the audience to learn from observing the program, said Rose Mathias, a spokeswoman for the music department.

“In a master class, they don’t mince words. They pull [the musicians] apart and put them back together, but it’s done with professionalism,” Mathias said.

Parkening, often compared with Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia, has performed at the White House, on the Grammy Awards and has appeared with Placido Domingo on “Live From Lincoln Center.”

The daylong master class will begin at 11 a.m. June 23 in the Music Recital Hall. Observers are welcome to attend the benefit for $35 each. Tickets are available through TicketMaster at the campus ticket office at (818) 677-2488.
