Assessor to Discuss Looming Tax Hikes

Share

Ventura County Assessor Dan Goodwin will meet with residents of La Conchita on Saturday to alert them that their tax assessments may be going up.

Recent market activity indicates that the seaside community is recovering from the 1995 landslide that dumped 600,000 tons of mud and rock on homes and streets, Goodwin said.

After the slide, the assessor’s office reduced assessments on many properties. Some property owners, whose homes were destroyed in the slide, were relieved of any tax burden. But several recent transfers of homes and lots indicate that property in La Conchita may be more salable and, therefore, responsible for more taxes.

Goodwin said he wanted to discuss the possibility of hikes with La Conchita’s approximately 300 property owners before they receive their value notices in July. He acknowledged that he may be the bearer of bad news.

“It’s not going to be an easy day,” Goodwin said.

Saturday’s meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the fire station at 5674 W. Pacific Coast Highway.
