A Biography of Planet Earth

Share

Seismic California is a leading player at the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth, opened this weekend at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. A cast of scarp formed in the 1992 Landers shaker is in the earthquake section, where you can also create your own seismograph signal with a good jump.

The centerpiece of the 8,830-square-foot hall, which has 168 rock specimens from 25 nations, is an eight-foot-wide globe, which beams a view of Earth’s clouds and changing surface as seen from outer space. Another section, the “Earth Event Wall,” broadcasts current news on storms, earthquakes and volcanoes, using NASA and other sources.

The museum is open daily. Admission is $8 adults, $6 students, $4.50 children 2-12. Telephone (212) 769-5100.
