Pursley Holds On for Third Victory

Greg Pursley’s win in the NASCAR Super Late Model race Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway was his third of the year. He would be in the top 10 in points if he hadn’t been disqualified in two other races he won. Another reason he is not higher in the standings is that Pursley doesn’t run on the circuit full time.

Pursley, of Newhall, held off challenges from points leader Rod Johnson and David Gilliland. Johnson, of Canyon Country, extended his lead over A.J. Dimarzo to 32 points, 388-356.

Albert Sallie of Tujunga thought he had won his third consecutive NASCAR Super Stock race.

But he and second-place finisher Kevin Fleischer of Simi Valley were disqualified, giving the victory to Covina’s Luis Del Real. Michael Pope of Orange still leads in the points race despite a third-place finish. He has an eight-point advantage over Del Real, 192-184.

Jason Morheiser of Glendora passed Steve Dyer of Signal Hill on the final lap to win the 30-lap American Trucks race.

Todd Burns won Friday night’s 40-lap NASCAR Late Model, holding off veterans Dusty McDonald and Gerrit Cromsigt. Burns, of Riverside, is the chief mechanic at the speedway’s race training center.

Richard Hooper, who fell from third to sixth in the points standings after Friday night’s race, did not participate because of a suspension for conduct detrimental to racing.

Other winners Friday included John Zernickon of Monrovia, who led all 20 laps to win the Legends Series race, and Stephen Peace of El Cajon, who won the Allison-Legacy race.
