Share

Schedule: 4 p.m., every game

* Television: Channel 9 today and Thursday

* Radio: KLAC (570), XPRS (1090)

* Pitching matchups: Tim Belcher (4-5, 6.57 ERA) vs. David Wells (6-5, 5.57) today; Steve Sparks (2-5, 5.49) vs. Joey Hamilton (0-4 11.32) Wednesday; Ken Hill (3-5, 4.87) vs. Kelvim Escobar (5-4, 5.59) Thursday.

* The last series: The Blue Jays swept the Angels at SkyDome in April. Mo Vaughn hit a home run in the final game of the series on his first pitch back from the disabled list. The Angels won three out of four from the Blue Jays in Anaheim, including a 17-1 victory on April 29. Shortstop Andy Sheets had five RBIs in that game. It came a night after the Angels blew a 10-0 lead but rallied for a 12-10 victory.

* About the Blue Jays: Pitcher David Wells blew up at reporters on June 5, then blew a 3-0 ninth-inning lead Wednesday in a 4-3, 14-inning loss to the Mets. So far, Wells has been a disappointment. He is 6-5 with a 5.57 earned-run average and has won only twice in his last seven starts. Shawn Green, out since May 28 with a wrist injury, was used as a pinch-runner in a game last week.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY AT NEW YORK

* Schedule: 4:30 p.m. Friday; 4 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. Sunday

* Television: Channel 9 Friday and Sunday.

* Radio: KLAC (570), XPRS (1090)

* Last series: For some reason, the Angels can handle the Yankees. They were the only team that had a winning record against them last season, winning six of 11. This year, the Angels had lost seven of nine games when they sputtered into New York on May 11 and proceeded to win three games in a row, two of them on shutouts. The flash point of that series was on May 11, when Angel closer Troy Percival hit Derek Jeter with an 0-2 pitch in the ninth. Don Zimmer, interim Yankee manager, accused Percival of doing it intentionally. Percival colorfully said Zimmer was wrong.

* About the Yankees: The Yankees rolled to the World Series title last season but are battling for the East Division lead with the Red Sox this season. Roger Clemens had his American League record 20-game winning streak stopped on June 7.

HISTORY LESSON

A look back at this week in Angel history:

June 16, 1964: The Angels defeated the Washington Senators, 7-5, to start the longest winning streak in club history (11 games).

June 17, 1993: Chili Davis pitched two innings against Texas, becoming the last position player to pitch for the Angels.

June 18, 1986: Don Sutton became the 19th pitcher to win 300 games, beating Texas, 5-1.
