Shawn McConnell of Brea won the four-lap scratch main race of the Speedway motorcycle racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa in front of a crowd of 5,019.

Gary Hicks of Riverside was second, Brad Oxley of San Juan Capistrano was third, Ed Castro of Ojhai was fourth and Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa was fifth.

McConnell also won the eight-lap handicap main, starting from the 50-yard line. Hicks was second (60) and Oxley was third (60).

Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson defeated Switzerland’s Martin and Paul Laciga, 15-9, Saturday to advance to today’s semifinals of the $340,000 Labatt Blue Toronto Open FIVB beach volleyball tournament.

Kiraly, from San Clemente, and Johnson (Laguna Beach High) will play Brazil’s ZeMarco deMelo and Ricardo Santos in one semifinal today. Kiraly is seeking a record 140th beach title.

Brazil’s Emanuel Scheffer and Jose Loiola will play Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong in the other semifinal.

In the women’s tournament, Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno advanced to the semifinals and will play Annett Buckner-Davis and Jenny Johnson-Jordan in one semifinal. Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede play fellow Brazilians Sandra Pires and Adriana Samuel in the other semifinal.

Roller Hockey International will hold its championship tournament at the Arrowhead Pond Aug. 18-19 and 22, the league announced.

The first-place teams from each conference will receive first-round byes. The second and third seeds from each conference will play Aug. 18 in a doubleheader, with the winners advancing to the conference finals, both on Aug. 19. The championship game is Aug. 22.

Chris Griffen of Santa Monica St. Monica threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to rally the Southern Section all-stars to a 26-23 victory over the Los Angeles City Section all-stars at Santa Monica College.

With the Southern Section trailing, 23-13, Griffen connected with Long Beach Poly’s Samie Parker on a 43-yard touchdown pass with 8:41 to play. He then led his team on a 10-play, 81-yard drive that culminated with his 16-yard touchdown pass to Devin Pitts of North Torrance for the winning touchdown.
