SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 2-month-old Huntington Beach girl died after her stroller was struck by a car in what police on Friday called a “tragic accident.”

Kathleen Hapke and her daughter, Sarah, were in the crosswalk at Warner Avenue and Springdale Street when they were struck by a car at about 7 p.m. Thursday. The child, who was thrown from her stroller, suffered head injuries and later died at UCI Medical Center in Orange. The mother suffered minor abrasions and cuts but refused treatment.

Kathleen Hapke, wrapped in a robe, her eyes swollen and red from crying, was being comforted at home by friends and relatives Friday.

“She has lost her first child,” said family friend Monty Stoner, his voice cracking with emotion. “It’s so horrible.”

Huntington Beach Lt. Luis Ochoa said the 20-year-old Huntington Beach man driving the vehicle has not been cited. Police are trying to determine right-of-way issues.
