The San Diego Padres are making up for lost time in a big way.

San Diego ran its winning streak to eight games, getting plenty of help during a meltdown by two Colorado pitchers in the five-run second inning as they defeated the Rockies, 13-6, Saturday night. The 13 runs were a season high, and the Padres have outscored their opponents, 50-20, during the streak.

It took the Padres 66 games to win three in a row, and now they’ve matched the second-longest winning streak in the majors this year. It is only the sixth time in 31 seasons they’ve won as many as eight in a row.

Colorado reliever Mike DeJean and Manager Jim Leyland were ejected by home-plate umpire Tom Hallion during a wild scene in the seventh inning.

DeJean complained to Hallion on his way to the dugout after being replaced by Dave Veres and was quickly ejected. DeJean was pushed back by pitching coach Milt May and catcher Jeff Reed.

Hallion started to walk away, then turned and charged toward DeJean, who was still being restrained. Reed turned and started going after Hallion, but was held back by batting coach Clint Hurdle.

Five Colorado pitchers combined for 10 walks, two short of a season high.

San Diego’s Matt Clement (4-7) won his third consecutive start. Dave Magadan drove in three runs, two on a homer in the first, and Wally Joyner and Ed Giovanola had two runs batted in.
