Two Van Nuys men pushing a disabled car on the Golden State Freeway in Arleta were killed early Sunday when they were struck by another car traveling 70 mph, authorities said.

Armando Garcia Jr., 19, and Francisco Rodriguez, 20, were pushing a stalled 1979 Datsun in the freeway’s No. 4 lane near Osborne Street in Arleta about 1 a.m. Sunday when a man driving a 1992 Honda Accord failed to notice they were outside the car and ran into them, authorities said.

Both cars suffered severe damage, and the 21-year-old driver of the Honda was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center with moderate injuries.

A 24-year-old man steering the Datsun as Garcia and Rodriguez pushed it was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries, said Officer Frank Sansone of the California Highway Patrol.

No arrests were made, Sansone said.
