Travel by Bus

Roy Eugene Boggs’ account of how he tried to travel from Culver City to Hacienda Heights (Voices, June 19) on the MTA bus with next to no prior experience as a bus rider was a one-sided, distorted view of what it’s like to ride the bus. I haven’t owned a car since 1983, and my first few months of riding the bus were difficult, admittedly, since it does take a while to learn about schedules, routes and where to get schedules and route maps.

However, being able to get around on the bus means that I only have to spend $42 a month on a bus pass as opposed to $300 or $400 a month that I used to spend driving a car. In addition, I can now take the train all of the way to Long Beach or the airport or half of the way to Disneyland or Century City from downtown L.A. I also find myself hoping for higher gas prices, since I used some of the money I saved riding the bus to invest in Exxon.
