6 Killed in Accidents Over 24-Hour Period

Five motorcyclists and a motorist were killed in five separate accidents in the northeast Valley and nearby mountains during a 24-hour period ending Sunday night, authorities said. One of the victims was a reserve officer from the San Fernando Police Department.

George Hughley, 60, a 20-year Police Department veteran from San Fernando, was riding his motorcycle at 7 p.m. Saturday when he collided with a car on the Foothill Freeway near Angeles Crest Highway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Powers.

Hughley was on loan to a Southern California drug task force assigned to investigating major drug traffickers, San Fernando police officials said. He was taken by helicopter to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, but died more than two hours later, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office,

Five people were killed Sunday, beginning with a 54-year-old Pomona man, who suffered fatal injuries when he hit a mountainside at 8:15 a.m. after failing to negotiate a curve on his BMW motorcycle on Angeles Crest Highway a few miles west of the Clear Creek ranger station, Powers said.

The unidentified victim, whose age was not released, was pronounced dead at 9:09 a.m. at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Several hours later, a Reseda man was critically injured and his 10-year-old son died after their motorcycle crossed over the center median of Angeles Crest Highway and slammed into the side of a mountain, a mile west of the first accident.

Two people were killed at 3:50 p.m., when their motorcycle hit a truck on Bouquet Canyon Road near Texas Canyon, Powers said. The victims, whose ages and identities were not released, died at the scene.

Less than 90 minutes later, one person was killed and two others injured in a head-on collision of two cars in Arleta, said Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

The accident took place at 5:15 p.m. at Devonshire Street and Arleta Avenue, he said.

A man who appeared to be in his early 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said.

A 19-year-old man was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where he was listed in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

The third victim, also 19, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center with head injuries and a possible fractured femur, Humphrey said. Authorities did not release names of any of the victims.

In San Fernando on Sunday, police mourned the loss off Hughley, who played football for the Washington Redskins and was a member of an Oklahoma Sooners’ NCAA championship team, calling him “a mountain of a man” and “a shining example to other law enforcement officials.”

“He was just one of a kind, the consummate professional,” said San Fernando Police Chief Dominick Rivetti. “His integrity, ethics and honesty were beyond reproach.”
