One Twain, Two Twacks

You obviously have an ax to grind with Shania Twain (“Smarting From Twain’s Wins,” by Randy Lewis, Feb. 25).

I, admittedly, am a huge fan of Shania’s but was objective enough when the Dixie Chicks won the coveted Grammy for country album of the year to give them credit and admit that “Wide Open Spaces” deserved the honor.

Twain’s single “You’re Still the One” is widely recognized as a beautifully crafted piece of music, no matter which genre you are discussing, be it pop or country. Her album “Come On Over” is definitely more pop than country, especially in the traditional sense. And, Shania’s battles with the Nashville establishment are well-chronicled. Let’s see, you’re from Los Angeles, but I smell a degree from Vanderbilt lurking below your surface. Must be a native Nashviller. Yep, that’s it. Shania done went and crossed over. Unforgivable!

It just so happens that when it comes to songwriting, the team of Twain/Lange might turn out to be as legendary someday as Lennon/McCartney, but then, you probably don’t know who they are, either. You wouldn’t know a good song if it bit you!

It’s a pity that people like you use the power of your pen (thankfully you are probably hardly read) to actually get personal in your put-downs of artists whom you do not like for some reason.

Shania is actually a good person and a role model, in addition to her talents. Yes, she is good-looking, but you are using that as an excuse to write her off. Give her a chance, will you?
