A trust fund has been established for the three young daughters of an Inglewood man who died last month while trying to rescue a boy who slipped through the ice of a pond near Lake Arrowhead.

Mario Lopez Mendoza, 26, drowned Feb. 18 before rescuers could reach him or Alex Roccamo, 7. The two were with a group of friends on an outing in the mountains.

Mendoza, who ran a car alarm shop on Century Boulevard, was remembered by family and friends as a generous and fun-loving man who adored his three daughters, ages 1, 5 and 7. The youngest of nine siblings who immigrated from Mexico a dozen years ago, he often went back to his native country to visit his parents.

“He passed away the way he would have wanted it: helping someone else,” said his wife, Blanca Lopez.

Donations can be sent to the Lopez Trust Fund, account 6369-080817, Wells Fargo Bank, 400 S. Market St., Inglewood, CA 90301.
