Moorpark Playhouse

An institution that has been part of our county for more than 70 years is in trouble. I am talking about the Moorpark Playhouse.

Over the years, the playhouse has been home to many things. For the longest time, it was the only theater in the East County that showed talkies. It survived the depression by holding money nights where people could win $20 or more.

Since 1982, it has been the home of the Magnificent Moorpark Melodrama & Vaudeville Company. During this time, it has consistently presented wholesome, affordable family entertainment--a rarity these days. Now it is time for all who have been to the Melodrama, who have booed at the villains, aahed at the sweet parts and cheered the beautiful women and handsome men to step forward. The Melodrama needs your help.

Over the past year there was a temporary shift in management. This change did not work out and now Linda Bredemann, the original owner, has taken back the reins. Unfortunately, during this interim management, finances were strained to the limit and beyond, and now there is a very real chance that the Melodrama will go away forever.

Anyone who wants to help should contact Linda at the Melodrama. She has set up a nonprofit foundation to accept donations. But the best thing the public can do is go to the shows. Buy a ticket, buy two, buy enough for the whole family and take some friends along.

You will see that the quality of the shows is back to the usual high standards. What’s is more, you will have fun and help save an institution as well.
