Red Cross to Host Disaster Preparedness Fair

The American Red Cross Los Angeles chapter will hold its third annual Disaster Preparedness Fair in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday.

A variety of organizations will participate in classes and demonstrations to help educate residents on how to prepare for earthquakes and other disasters from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Red Cross Valley Service Center, 14717 Sherman Way, Van Nuys.

Classes will be taught in English and Spanish. The final session will begin at 3 p.m.

Throughout the day, Red Cross volunteers will describe and demonstrate essential disaster survival items and first aid supplies.

Literature regarding Y2K family and personal preparedness will also be available.

Looney Tunes character Tweety Bird, along with a preparedness-themed puppet show will provide entertainment for children.

The “Yogi Bear Schoolhouse,” a mobile 6.0 magnitude earthquake simulator will also be on hand. There will also be karaoke music and free refreshments served from an emergency response vehicle by Red Cross volunteers.

Los Angeles Police and Fire Department personnel will display emergency vehicles, and representatives of the Los Angeles branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will discuss pet safety during a calamity.
