Girl, 5, Hospitalized After Being Hit by Car

A 5-year-old girl was hit by a car Sunday afternoon when she darted into a residential street, according to a written statement from the Venture County Sheriff’s Department.

The girl, who lives in Camarillo, was conscious and crying when emergency personnel reached her, according to the statement. She was being treated Sunday night at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

Authorities would not release the girl’s name, and a hospital nursing supervisor declined to give her condition. According to the release, she was stable before being taken to the hospital.

The girl was struck shortly before noon when she ran into the street in the 300 block of Sonora Drive. According to the statement, she was hit by a vehicle driven by Newbury Park resident Verlon Curtis, 64.

At the time, Curtis was traveling at less than 5 mph, according to the release.

No citations were issued, and the investigation is continuing.
