LOS ALAMITOS

Police will soon be taking prisoners to the Seal Beach Jail rather than their own police station. City Council members voted last week to use a $10,000 law enforcement block grant to contract with Seal Beach police for use of their 30-bed jail. Officers with the small Los Alamitos department found themselves stuck watching the 498 prisoners they booked last year rather than going back into the field after an arrest, police officials said. Because of overcrowding at Orange County Jail and tighter state regulations on supervising prisoners, the city had to choose between more hiring and training or contracting out for the services, police said.
