Readers Do Whatever It Takes to Rip Sheffield

Kevin Malone, the new self-appointed “Sheriff of the NL West,” sounds more like Barney Fife. Does he have any idea how ridiculous he sounds when he is quoted as saying “Sheff is willing to do whatever it takes to help us win”?

Gary Sheffield is one of the most selfish athletes playing professional sports today. This is the same guy who admitted to intentionally playing badly as a Milwaukee Brewer so he would be traded, who has had only two good seasons in a lengthy career and is now whining like the spoiled child he is over his switch to left field and his dissatisfaction with the dress code.

If Sheffield is willing to do “whatever it takes to help us win,” he will shut up, play where the Dodgers tell him, dress the way they tell him, or retire. Personally I hope he opts for the latter.

To even consider trading Eric Karros, who has played hurt and gives 100% of whatever he has every time he steps on the field, so that Sheffield can play first base, is the last straw for me as a Dodger fan.

The Braves have lost Andres Galarraga because of cancer in his back, the Astros have lost Moises Alou because of a freak treadmill accident, the Cubs have lost Kerry Wood for the season because of an elbow injury. Then again, it could be worse for those teams. They could have Gary Sheffield, as the Dodgers do.

I don’t see Garth Brooks complaining about playing left field.
