Two California Highway Patrol officers were shot at as they conducted a routine traffic stop in Mission Hills on Saturday evening on the southbound Golden State Freeway, but neither was hit, officials said.

The unknown sniper, possibly someone lurking on the side of the freeway north of San Fernando Mission Boulevard, fired the shots about 6:20 p.m., said CHP Officer Richard Perez.

“They don’t know where the shots came from,” Perez said. “There were approximately two shots fired and one of them apparently struck the guardrail.”

Authorities closed the freeway for about half an hour as Los Angeles Police Department officers searched the area with dogs.

Sgt. Mathew St. Pierre of the LAPD’s Foothill Division said about 40 officers from three Valley stations responded to the call. The search turned up no bullet casings or other evidence.
