A New Way to Exercise Your Urge to Gamble

Share

The only exercise you’ll get playing a slot machine is plunking in the coins and pulling the lever, right? Not anymore.

The Sunset Station Hotel and Casino, in Henderson, Nev., is the first casino to feature a “Pedal ‘N Play Cycle”: a stationary bicycle hooked up to a slot machine. Buttons on the handlebars place the bet and activate the spin, while a computerized control panel varies the intensity of your workout and gives a readout of calories burned. You can play the slots only while pedaling, and vice versa.

Sunset Station’s two Pedal ‘N Plays are strategically located on the gaming floor right across from the all-you-can-eat buffet. According to one casino employee, the machines aren’t used very often and have been “more of a curiosity” since being installed at the end of last year. Nevertheless, Carnival Cruise Lines plans to have two of them on its smoke-free Paradise ship by May.
