The city moved a step closer Tuesday to installing cameras at intersections after City Council members heard from police officials. The cameras, similar to those used in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, take pictures of cars--and the drivers--that run red lights. The council soon will consider testing two digitized cameras, one that is video and one that is photographic.
Police officers estimate that the cameras will cost $50,000 per direction. In addition to catching red light violators, the cameras would also postpone the green light for the cross-traffic lights, thus reducing the risk of an accident caused by the violator.
