Chris Chelios says he’s still trying to get used to playing with his new Detroit Red Wing teammates. The process won’t take long, judging by early indications.

Chelios scored his first goal with the Red Wings and Sergei Fedorov had a goal and two assists Friday night in a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit.

“It’s a whole different game for me,” Chelios said after his second game with the Red Wings, who obtained him Tuesday in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. “I’m getting more confident every day, and these guys make that happen.”

The perennial all-star defenseman was on the ice for three of the Red Wing’s goals and played almost 25 minutes over 24 shifts.

He scored during a three-goal first period that made it a pretty easy night for the Red Wings.

“This is a great team that just got greater,” Lightning Coach Jacques Demers said of the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion. “Now they’ve got hope they can come back and repeat. Their fourth line could be our second line most nights, and their defense with Chelios now is awesome.”

Colorado 3, Washington 1--Patrick Roy tied Jacques Plante for the most overall victories in NHL history with 505 as the Avalanche won at Denver.

Roy, who had 19 saves, has won 406 regular-season games and 99 playoff games. He is 41 regular-season victories away from Terry Sawchuk’s NHL record.

Aaron Miller broke a third-period tie with his fifth goal of the season and Dale Hunter had an empty-netter against his former team.

Edmonton 2, St. Louis 1--Rem Murray scored twice in the second period at Edmonton.

Murray scored on the power play at 11:34 of the second when defenseman Tom Poti’s point shot deflected off his chest and into the net. There was a video review of the goal, but the video-goal judge ruled that it was good.

Murray made the score 2-0 44 seconds later with his 16th goal, beating Grant Fuhr after taking a pass across the goal-mouth from Bill Guerin.

Ottawa 1, San Jose 1--Defenseman Wade Redden scored with 46 seconds remaining in the third period to pull the Senators even at Kanata, Canada.

Florida 4, Nashville 1--Radek Dvorak scored two goals and Sean Burke stopped 27 shots for the Panthers at Sunrise, Fla.

Toronto 7, Carolina 2--Steve Thomas and Fredrik Modin scored two goals each to lead the Maple Leafs at Greensboro, N.C.

Around the League

The Calgary Flames, facing a growing slate of injuries, recalled recently acquired defensemen Lee Sorochan and Wade Belak from their American Hockey League affiliate at Saint John, Canada. . . . The NHL announced that Calgary was selected ahead of six other cities to stage the 2000 entry draft. And with NHL expansion swelling membership to 30 teams by then, the event will be held over two days for the first time.
