Richard Hamilton scored 28 points and the Huskies went on an 31-8 run to end the first half. Coach Jim Calhoun was not at the game because of an intestinal virus.

Connecticut 78, New Mexico 56

The Huskies scored the first 17 points of the game and never looked back. Hamilton and Khalid El-Amin each had 21 points.

* West Regional, semifinals

Connecticut 78, Iowa 68

Iowa, fueled by the emotion surrounding the departure of Coach Tom Davis, used its depth and strength inside to stay close most of the game. But the Huskies outscored the Hawkeyes, 25-15, in the final 10 minutes. Hamilton had 24 points.

* West Regional, final

Connecticut 67, Gonzaga 62

El-Amin didn’t make a field goal in 12 attempts and the Huskies barely survived. Connecticut shot only 37% from the field and Gonzaga 35%, but the Huskies dominated the boards, 47-33.

* Final Four

Connecticut 64, Ohio State 58

Hamilton scored 24 points and made several key baskets down the stretch to hold off Ohio State. El-Amin shook off the poor Gonzaga game and scored 18 points.

* Championship,

Connecticut 77, Duke 74

The scoring of tournament most-valuable-player Hamilton (27 points) and defense of Ricky Moore put the Huskies in position to win the national title. With Connecticut ahead 75-74, Trajan Langdon--who had kept Duke in the game with his three-point shooting--tried to drive in the lane against Moore but was called for traveling with 5.4 seconds left when he stumbled trying to make a spin move. After El-Amin was fouled and made two free throws, Langdon tried to dribble and get off a game-tying shot with Moore again dogging him, but fell near the three-point line and lost the ball as time ran out.
