TONIGHT vs. N.Y./N.J. MetroStars

4 PDT, FSW2 (8 p.m.)

* Site--Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.

* Radio--KRLA (1110), KTNQ (1020, Spanish).

* Records--Galaxy 3-3, MetroStars 2-3.

* Record vs. MetroStars (1998)--2-0.

* Update--Assistant coach Ralph Perez was in charge when the Galaxy defeated the San Jose Clash, 1-0, at the Rose Bowl last weekend for its first victory in regulation. Now, the players must answer to Sigi Schmid. “Our directness of play needs to improve,” he said. “We play too much with the ball in front of the opponent’s defense. More than I would like. [Tonight’s] lineup will be comparable to what you saw last weekend, but as the season goes on I’m not tied to a set lineup.” The most obvious change in the last game was the return of defender Robin Fraser and midfielder-defender Danny Pena from injury. The Galaxy also switched from using three forwards to two. Affected by the changes, in other words benched, were midfielder Daniel Hernandez and forwards Welton and Lawrence Lozzano. It was defender Paul Caligiuri who scored against the Clash. Clint Mathis has only two goals and Cobi Jones has one. Former Galaxy player Mark Semioli is now captain of the MetroStars, who also feature former L.A. favorite Eduardo Hurtado.
