8-2 Victory for Tigers Is a Catwalk

Jose Canseco of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays thought he had broken out of an 0-for-10 slump in style when he blasted a pitch from Detroit Tiger pitcher Justin Thompson into the air at Tropicana Field.

But instead of getting credit for three-run home run--and his 11th of the season--Canseco became the ninth player, and first this season, to hit one of the catwalks suspended from the roof in fair territory. Canseco was held to a ground-rule double--which scored one run--when the ball became stuck on the overhead structure.

Thompson got out of the inning without allowing another run and went on win his fourth consecutive decision.

“I thought I hit it well enough to go out of Yellowstone,” Canseco said.

Juan Encarnacion’s three-run double keyed a four-run first inning for the Tigers.

Thompson (4-2) gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings. He has given up only four runs in 27 innings of his last four starts.

Damion Easley homered for the Tigers, Fred McGriff for the Devil Rays.
