Cops from around the county will shed their badges and guns in favor of jerseys and cleats and meet on the gridiron in Oxnard today for a charity tackle football game.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department’s 17th annual Pride Bowl honors fallen officers and deputies.

This year’s honorees are Sheriff’s Senior Deputy Lisa Whitney and Ventura Harbor Patrol Officer Paul Korber.

Whitney, 28, was killed Aug. 12 in a traffic collision in Ventura. At the time of the crash, she was on her way to interview a witness.

Korber, 45, died March 15, 1998, while trying to rescue a family of three who were caught in heavy rip tides off the coast of Ventura. The family survived.

Proceeds raised at the football game will be donated to memorial funds for Korber and Whitney.

Admission to the event is $5 per person and kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. at the Oxnard High School Football Stadium.
