A roof fire nearly destroyed a medical office and pet clinic late Saturday night, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

A passerby alerted the Fire Department at 11:41 p.m. that the roof was ablaze at the Westlake Urgent Care Center and the adjoining Anza Animal Clinic, at 3575 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.

Firefighters responded at 11:44 p.m. and extinguished the blaze by 3:23 a.m.

There were no pets or patients inside either clinic. A brother of one of the tenants, Jalil Golzari, was inside the building, but he exited when the power went out and met the firefighters when they arrived at the scene.

Thirty-five firefighters and five engines responded to the fire. Damage to the structure was estimated at $200,000, with another $500,000 of damage to the contents of the building.

“Everything on the sides looks all right, but the whole roof is just gone,” said Oscar Diaz, manager of a KFC restaurant near the clinic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
