John Olerud’s streak of reaching base safely in consecutive games ended at 47 Sunday when he struck out as a pinch-hitter for the final out of the New York Mets’ 11-6 loss to Arizona at Phoenix.

At the time, Olerud was the only pinch-hit option left in the dugout for the Mets, who carry 12 pitchers and 13 position players on their roster.

Olerud had reached base either with a hit or a walk in the last 17 games of last year and the first 30 this years.

The Chicago Cubs put outfielder Glenallen Hill on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring and recalled Bo Porter from triple-A Iowa.

Hill became the ninth Cub to go on the disabled list this season. He hit .452 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 15 games before aggravating the hamstring.
