Heat Rebounds and Gets Even With Knicks

The Miami Heat still have a shot against the New York Knicks.

Alonzo Mourning scored 26 points and Miami rediscovered its shooting touch Monday night, making 51% of its shots to beat New York, 83-73, and even their best-of-five series at 1-1.

The Heat made a season-low 35% in a 20-point loss to New York in Game 1, but this time they overcame 18 turnovers and another poor shooting performance by Tim Hardaway.

Dan Majerle made two three-pointers, his first baskets of the series, to thwart New York’s comeback hopes in the fourth quarter.

Miami also clamped down defensively, holding the Knicks to 39% shooting. Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston, who scored 22 points apiece in Game 1, managed only 15 and 12, respectively.

The Heat’s bench was better too in Game 2, with Terry Porter contributing 11 points and Clarence Weatherspoon nine.

Mourning went 10 for 16 from the field, had eight rebounds and blocked four shots in 46 minutes.

Patrick Ewing had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, but he was hampered by foul trouble, as were Sprewell and Kurt Thomas.

The series moves Wednesday night to Madison Square Garden, where the Heat are only 4-9 under Coach Pat Riley.
