Charter Reform

Share

Yesterday I received in the mail my copy of the proposed charter reform, which we are to vote on in the upcoming election. I think it is great that everyone will get a copy before casting their vote. However, after reading select passages it has become clear to me that this mailing may cause more confusion than clarity.

I am willing to bet that even our council members are having trouble deciphering the legalese within this document. How can we be expected to vote sensibly on something that will affect us for years to come if we can’t understand what is being proposed?

It seems to me that it would behoove the city to not only explain what is being proposed, but to also clarify how certain changes differ from the way the city operates presently. I don’t think this is too much to ask of our elected officials, especially if they would like us, the electorate, to be fully informed before we cast our vote. Otherwise, who knows how we may vote the next time our council member is up for reelection?
