Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism bestowed gold medals for journalistic excellence on the Santa Ana College student newspaper El Don and student magazine West 17th. During the 1990s, these publications have combined for 18 gold medals. El Don earned its 10th consecutive gold medal in the Columbia Scholastic Press Assn. competition; the judges remarked that the newspaper was one of the best collegiate papers they had seen in years and lauded the editorial staff for quality headlines, color and editorial content. West 17th captured its fifth consecutive gold medal. The judges commended the magazine for its readability and outstanding student-oriented stories as well as innovative design, photo quality and diversity of articles.
