Mayor Peter M. Green made a big splash at the seventh annual Duck-A-Thon on Saturday, winning one of the three races held to benefit the Huntington Beach Community Clinic. Green joined about 2,500 people from across the county who tossed rubber ducks off the pier, hoping to win prizes. His duck, decorated with painted flames and sunglasses, took the lead in the Mayor’s Race, beating the mayors of seven other cities.

His trick? Oceanography. “I’ve studied the currents and tides,” Green said. His duck landed about 50 yards ahead of the other competitors.

The big winner of the day was the clinic, which raised about $85,000. The clinic provides psychological and medical care for about 30,000 working poor and uninsured people in Orange County.
