Share

Cal State Fullerton’s Yasmin Mossadeghi had two hits and three RBIs as the Titans handed Tennessee its first mercy-rule loss with a 12-1 victory in five innings in the NCAA Division I softball regionals in Seattle.

The Titans (44-26) had six doubles, one shy of the NCAA postseason record set in 1995 by Princeton.

Mossadeghi, Stacy Pierson and Stephenie Little each hit home runs for the Titans, who were one away from the NCAA postseason record for home runs in a game.

Dara Marzolo added two hits and two RBIs for the Titans, who will play Texas A&M; (41-20) today.

In another game:

Oklahoma 3, Long Beach State 1--The 49ers couldn’t overcome a strong pitching performance by Jennifer Stewart (22-5), who struck out two and walked one in a six-hitter for Oklahoma (40-14) in Baton Rouge, La.

Melanie Muniz had two hits for Long Beach (33-20).

In the regional at UCLA:

UCLA 7, Alabama 0--After scoring five runs in the first three innings at Easton Stadium, the only drama remaining for top-ranked UCLA was whether Courtney Dale would pitch a perfect game.

After five innings without a baserunner, Dale committed a throwing error to allow the Suzanne Olcott to get on, then Kelley Askew singled to break up the no-hitter leading off the seventh.

UCLA (56-6) will play Creighton this afternoon in the second round of the double-elimination tournament.

Third baseman Julie Adams (Cypress High) was two for three with a pair of two-run home runs and five runs batted in for UCLA. Her run-scoring groundout in the first inning gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Then her home run to left field capped off a four-run third. She added a line blast over the left-field wall in the fifth.
