Tony Gwynn’s hit parade was thrown off pace when he strained his left calf in the first inning of the San Diego Padres’ 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Friday night.

Gwynn, 25 hits short of 3,000, will be put on the 15-day disabled list today.

“It’s just one of those things that happens, I guess. I’m going on the DL for at least two weeks, and then we’ll see what happens,” said Gwynn, who was on crutches after the game.

Facing Brett Tomko, Gwynn hit a ground ball to second base to start an inning-ending double play. He appeared to hurt himself two or three steps out of the batter’s box.

Gwynn left the game batting .333.

Tomko (1-2) also was injured, leaving because of a sprained ankle after the third inning. He was hurt when he rushed his delivery as Eric Owens stole home with two outs to give the Padres a 3-0 lead. Tomko faced two more batters, walking John Vander Wal and retiring Greg Myers on a grounder for the final out.

Tomko, who four-hit the Padres over 8 2/3 innings of a 3-0 victory at Cincinnati on Sunday, gave up three runs and five hits.

Cincinnati’s winning streak ended at five games.

Damian Jackson homered off Scott Sullivan with two out in the sixth to give San Diego a 4-0 lead. But Cincinnati scored three runs in the seventh, including Mark Lewis’ leadoff homer off starter Woody Williams (2-2).
