Two Americans--a woman and her grandmother--were swept away by a wave while walking on a Mexican beach and drowned before fishermen could reach them, authorities said Sunday.

Sara Means, 22, and Ethel Buteh Wogner, 73, both of St. George, Utah, were walking along the beach of the Solmar hotel in the popular southern Baja resort city of Cabo San Lucas on Saturday when they were swept away, according to police.

Other Americans who were fishing nearby swam out and retrieved the women’s bodies, judicial police commander Carlos Dominguez Lara said by telephone from nearby La Paz.

Means was dead when she was brought ashore, and Buteh Wogner died soon after she reached the beach, he said.

Judicial police commander Gonzalo Cardenas in Cabo San Lucas said the beach is known for being dangerous.

“That part has taken several people away already,” Cardenas said. “It’s a pity. They’re warned to be very careful, but they don’t pay attention.”

The press office of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City was closed Sunday, and the U.S. consul in Cabo San Lucas didn’t immediately return a message.
