California roadways may soon become Reagan Country again.

Ronald Reagan fans would be able to buy commemorative license plates stamped with the likeness of the former governor and president under legislation approved Tuesday by the Assembly.

“I can’t think of anyone who was more important to California,” said Assemblyman Tony Strickland of Thousand Oaks, a self-described Reagan Republican.

Strickland said the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation hopes the design--to be worked out with the Department of Motor Vehicles--will display the former president in a cowboy hat.

The license plates would cost $50. After administrative fees, leftover funds would be directed to the Reagan Presidential Library, which is partially in Strickland’s district.

Bill Gengler, a DMV spokesman, said the Reagan plate would be California’s first to honor an individual. The state already has 52 specialized and commemorative plates honoring a wide variety of categories.

Strickland’s measure was approved 62 to 7, but not before a few Democrats lampooned the proposal.

“Next thing, you’ll want a Nixon plate and a Ford plate. . . . It’s absolutely ridiculous,” said Assemblyman Richard Floyd (D-Wilmington).
