A gunman who fatally wounded his wife and shot his stepdaughter before barricading himself inside a Baldwin Park apartment was found dead when sheriff’s deputies entered the home early Saturday, authorities said.

A 1-year-old baby in the apartment was injured by flying debris during the standoff and was treated at a local hospital.

Officials declined to identify the gunman or the victims, pending notification of family members.

The standoff began at 9:30 p.m. Friday, as Baldwin Park police were called to a family disturbance in the 12000 block of Ramona Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they heard gunshots and saw a 19-year-old woman, who was shot in the right thigh, run from the apartment, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Flamm. The woman, the man’s stepdaughter, was hospitalized in stable condition.

The gunman fired several shots at police before barricading himself inside, Flamm said. A special sheriff’s unit entered the home to rescue the gunman’s estranged wife, who had been shot in the stomach. She died a short time later.

The gunman was found dead inside, but deputies had yet to determine whether he shot himself or was shot by officers.
