UCLA’s hitters and pitchers took turns letting each other down at Wichita, Kan., and the Bruins’ season is over because of it.

The Bruins stranded 12 runners in losing to Wichita State, 4-2. Later, in an elimination game, the Bruins wasted five home runs in a 17-10 loss to Oklahoma State.

In the second game, UCLA (31-31) got two home runs from Bill Scott, the first the second of consecutive shots in the sixth inning and the other the first of three in a row by the Bruins in the eighth.

But they were meaningless, as the Cowboys (42-18) built a 10-2 lead after five innings and added seven more runs in the sixth.

Right fielder LaMont Matthews had a grand slam in the Cowboys’ seven-run first inning, the first of his two home runs, and was three for three with five runs batted in. The Cowboys hit four home runs.

“We hit with them, we fielded with them, we just didn’t pitch with them,” UCLA Coach Gary Adams said. “Eliminate [the seven-run innings] and we beat them, 10-3.”

In the earlier game, Wichita State (59-12) built a 4-0 lead after three innings and hung on as UCLA left runners on base in every inning but the eighth.
