Martinez First to 10 Wins

Pedro Martinez became the first pitcher to reach 10 victories with help from Nomar Garciaparra as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians, 4-2, Saturday at Cleveland.

Garciaparra’s three-run home run in the eighth inning--his third homer in two games--gave Martinez the victory over the best-hitting team in the majors.

Martinez (10-1) limited the Indians to five hits in eight-plus innings and had nine strikeouts to raise his major league-leading total to 117.

Tom Gordon struggled to convert his major league-record 52nd consecutive save, walking three batters in the ninth before striking out Travis Fryman for his ninth save.

New York 8, Toronto 3--David Cone (5-2) pitched seven strong innings and the Yankees scored five runs in the fifth inning at Toronto for their fourth consecutive victory.

The Yankees have scored 30 runs in their last four games, after scoring 35 in their previous 12.

Seattle 11, Tampa Bay 5--David Segui had a double and triple and scored three runs for the Mariners at Seattle.

Mariner starter Jeff Fassero (3-6) was struck in the left hand by a line drive hit by Herbert Perry with two out in the fifth inning and left after the inning.

Baltimore 7, Oakland 5--Harold Baines hit a three-run homer and pinch hitter B.J. Surhoff followed with a solo shot in the eighth inning at Oakland as the Orioles ended the Athletics’ home winning streak at nine games.

The Orioles overcame a 5-0 deficit in winning on the road for the seventh time in 24 games.

Chicago 7, Detroit 1--Greg Norton hit his fifth home run in three days and James Baldwin (3-4) pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game for the White Sox at Detroit.

Ray Durham had two RBI doubles as the White Sox won their second in a row after dropping eight of their previous 10.

Texas 4, Minnesota 3--Reliever Mike Trombley’s wild pitch enabled Ivan Rodriguez to score the winning run in the 10th inning at Arlington, Texas, as the Rangers won their fifth in a row.
