IRVINE
City Council members padded the anti-El Toro airport war chest Tuesday with the single largest contribution to date--$2.3 million from the $7-million budget surplus.
Out of the 15 total projects awarded part of the 1998-99 surplus, only four others were given $200,000 or more.
The new funding will be used to fight the county’s plans to build an international airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. The $3 million already in the city’s campaign fund has been committed to various anti-airport activities, said Dan Jung, the city’s executive assistant.
