Injury Ends Saffer’s Season

Share

Starting right guard Mike Saffer suffered a season-ending knee injury Tuesday during practice.

The redshirt freshman went down on the first play of a five-minute scrimmage for the starters and was carted off Spaulding Field. The preliminary diagnosis of a sprained ligament soon was confirmed, an injury that usually requires four weeks of recovery time.

The Bruins have less than three weeks remaining--a bye Saturday before finishing with Washington Nov. 13 at the Rose Bowl and then USC Nov. 20 at the Coliseum. Senior Matt Phelan, who started twice earlier in the season when Saffer was out because of a sprained ankle, and twice on the left side while Oscar Cabrera served a suspension, likely will return to the opening lineup.
