Emmett Pruett; Contractor, Civic Volunteer

Thousand Oaks resident Emmett Pruett died Friday at Los Robles Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was 81.

Pruett was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Fredricktown, Mo. He moved from Missouri to Ventura County in 1946 and was a 53-year county resident.

Pruett was a self-employed general contractor whose company built homes for several celebrities in the Hidden Hills community in Thousand Oaks and several commercial buildings in the area, including restaurants.

Pruett was active in the formation of Thousand Oaks as a city. He served on the first water board and the Conejo Valley School Board of Trustees. He was a volunteer firefighter and gave his time to the Manna Food Bank.

Pruett is survived by his wife, Ruth Pruett of Thousand Oaks; two sons, Carrol Pruett of Arroyo Grande and Gary Pruett of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Linda Atkins of Salem, Ore.; two brothers, Clell Pruett of Forrest Hill, Mo., and Dallas Pruett of Santa Barbara; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary in Thousand Oaks. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary, with the Rev. Craig Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial Park.
