Blue Cross Receives Grant, Awards for Patient Care

Share

Blue Cross of California, the California subsidiary of WellPoint Health Networks in Thousand Oaks, has received a significant grant and two awards for its care for rural and low-income patients.

The grant was for $1.2 million from the Healthy Families Program of the California Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board to implement a variety of rural community health programs. Blue Cross received funding for 13 of 16 proposals it submitted to the board.

The grant will help Blue Cross of California establish additional telemedicine sites in locations with high populations of seasonal and migrant farm workers, expand mental health and substance-abuse recovery availability in rural areas, and add more mobile health visits through a Health on Wheels program.

“This grant is crucial to helping us ensure that Healthy Families Program and Medi-Cal families receive quality and technologically advanced medical care without having to leave their communities,” said John Monahan, general manager of state-sponsored programs for Blue Cross.

The two awards came from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Assn., which honored Blue Cross of California for programs it operated in medical and pharmacy management. Blue Cross of California was selected from more than 30 program nominations.
