A security guard and another man were charged with murder Tuesday in the slaying of a Newhall grocery market supervisor during a robbery last month, authorities said.

Security guard Vincente Godoy, 27, and Carmelo Corado, 40, were also charged with two counts of robbery in the Oct. 30 holdup of Tresierras market in the 24300 block of San Fernando Road, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.

Gibbons said prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Godoy, who was on duty at the time of the robbery, is suspected of letting two holdup men in through the back entrance of the grocery, Gibbons said.

The robbers are accused of fatally shooting store supervisor Luis Valdez, 32. They also shot and wounded assistant manager Teresa Cano, Gibbons said. About $4,200 was taken.

Edward J. Quijada, executive vice president of Tresierras Bros. Corp., which owns the five-store chain, said Godoy was employed by another company under contract to provide security services to the supermarket.

Authorities have released a third man arrested in connection with the case, Gibbons said. He was identified as Deydis Corado of Canyon Country. Godoy and Carmelo Corado are being held without bail and are scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 29 in San Fernando Municipal Court.
