Elmer M. Holk, a retired Navy captain and electronics engineer, died Friday at home in Camarillo. He was 89.

He was born July 10, 1910, in Grand Forks, N.D., after his parents had emigrated from Norway. The family moved to Long Beach soon after he became a teenager.

He pursued a career in electronic engineering and graduated from Pacific State University in Los Angeles. When World War II began, he was servicing and installing the first television sets.

In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy, was sent to officers’ training school and also electronics schools at Harvard and MIT. On D-Day, he was in Dunkeswell, England, with Fleet Air Wing 7. Other tours of duty included teaching electronics classes and airborne radar navigation.

During the Korean War, he served as the electronics officer for Fleet Air Wing 7 on the East Coast.

His last tour of duty was at Point Mugu. During his final assignment, he was in charge of Naval Reserve Research Co. 11-8. When he retired, he was a captain.

He continued at Point Mugu in a civilian capacity as electronics engineer supervisor dealing with strategic weapons.

On Dec. 30, 1961, he married Rose, and they made Camarillo their home.

Shellie Johnson, his granddaughter, said that Holk enjoyed golf, bowling and working outside at home where he had avocados, citrus trees and macadamia trees.

He was a member of the Mt. Cross Lutheran Church in Camarillo and Masonic Lodge 824 York Rite and Shriners.

Holk was preceded in death by a son Martin, daughter Marilyn Hatfield, brothers Trygve and Melvin, and a great grandchild.

He is survived by his wife Rose, stepson Robert Holk, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Mt. Cross Lutheran Church, a hospice, or to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at Pierce Bros. Griffin Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Cross Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be at noon Saturday at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo.
