Veterans Day Events Scheduled

Live music, speeches, a flyover, and color guards presenting American flags will highlight Veterans Day activities throughout the county. All events will be open to the public.

One of the largest will be “The Echo of the Wall” at 3 p.m. at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial Park at the Ventura Freeway and Lindero Canyon Road in Thousand Oaks.

The event commemorates the park’s July display of a 240-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

Also in Thousand Oaks at 10:30 a.m. today, the Military Order of the World Wars will hold a ceremony that includes a flyover by the Condor Squadron of Van Nuys at the Veterans Memorial at Conejo Creek Park, 1379 E. Janss Road. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) will be the keynote speaker.

A service is also planned for 10:30 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park at 5400 Valentine Road in Ventura. Former Rep. Robert Lagomarsino will give the keynote speech, and the master of ceremonies is retired Army Lt. Charles A. Bennett, a member of the Ventura County chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars.

Also in Ventura, there will be a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. at American Legion Post No. 339, 83 S. Palm St. The cost is $3.50 a person.

American Legion Post No. 741 will host a service at 11 a.m. at Constitution Park at Paseo Camarillo and Carmen Drive in Camarillo. There will be a color guard, an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance and guest speakers, including county Supervisor Kathy Long.

At 8 a.m. in Moorpark, there will be a dedication of a flagpole at the Veterans Memorial at Los Angeles and Moorpark avenues. At 10 a.m., there will be a Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Grove at Poindexter Park behind Chaparral Middle School.

The Veterans Commemorative Committee will host its fifth annual Veterans Day Celebration starting at 10 a.m. at Plaza Park on 5th Street in downtown Oxnard.

The keynote speaker is Brig. Gen. John E. Iffland, commander of the 145th Airlift Wing, Channel Islands Air National Guard Station. The Oxnard High School band will perform and the Salvation Army and local Kiwanis Club will host a free continental breakfast at the park between 9 and 9:45 a.m.

And in Simi Valley, Richard Hlebasko of VFW Post No. 10049 will be the keynote speaker at an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Rancho Tapo Community Park at Avenida Simi and Lemon Drive.
