City Council members warned the Orange County Board of Supervisors this week not to interfere with an anti-airport initiative that has already qualified for the March ballot.

The council has threatened to file a legal challenge if the supervisors succeed in stalling the measure.

“There’s an opportunity here for anti-democratic mischief-making, and to the extent that the supervisors might be so brazen and so foolish to mess with the people’s right to vote, we have to be prepared to go to court to enforce a timely vote,” said Councilman Larry Agran at Tuesday’s meeting.

The measure, called the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative, would demand a two-thirds countywide vote to allow the construction or expansion of any airport, toxic landfill or jail within 100 feet of residences.
