Body Recovered in Newport Harbor

The body of a 48-year-old Long Beach man was found in Newport Harbor a quarter of a mile off Balboa Island by two Newport Beach men cruising in their boat, authorities said Friday.

Steven Robert John had been missing for three weeks, and the Harbor Patrol suspected the man had drowned after officers found his brother’s boat capsized off the island on Oct. 29, Orange County Harbor Patrol Sgt. Frank Sheets said.

The man did not have any injuries, and investigators do not believe his death is suspicious, Sheets said.

“There is no indication he was wearing a life jacket,” Sheets said. “It is probably an accident. . . . The survival time in the water is less than four hours.”
