A South Gate officer on routine patrol spotted a man in his late 20s or early 30s walking toward the motel with a gun in his waistband, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Elisabeth Sachs.

The officer ordered the man to raise his hands but the man continued walking toward the motel, she said. The man started pounding on a motel room door and then turned toward the officer when no one answered the door, Sachs said.

The man drew the gun and pointed it at the officer, ignoring a command to drop the weapon, she said. The officer shot the man several times, Sachs said.

The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, where he was pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting at the request of South Gate police.
