Supervisor John K. Flynn was the first to file candidacy papers Monday for the March election, declaring his intention to seek a sixth term representing Oxnard-area residents on the Board of Supervisors.
Flynn took out papers shortly after 8 a.m. and returned them filled out with 40 signatures by 10 a.m., election officials said.
The incumbent said it is a tradition for him to file before anyone else.
“I like to be first in everything,” he said. “It shows fire in the belly.”
Port Hueneme Councilman Jon Sharkey, a candidate for the 37th Assembly District seat, was the only other candidate to file papers by late Monday afternoon, said elections clerk Christina Valenzuela.
Sharkey is expected to face teacher Roz McGrath for the Democratic nod in the March primary. The winner will likely face Assemblyman Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks), who is serving his first term.
County election officials saw brisk business as other potential candidates took out papers for county, state and federal offices. Candidates have until mid-December to file nomination papers.
